There are streaks you don’t want to end and those you can’t wait to see the back of.
Leongatha, in the Gippsland league, has one they want to keep hold of — the status of Victorian local footy’s longest winning streaks.
But on the weekend it was Frankston YCW’s winning streak came to an end at the hands of Mt Eliza.
Meanwhile the Western Rams have gone 51 games without a win as another club approaches the half-century.
Here are biggest winning and losing current active streaks in Victoria.
Longest winning streaks
LEONGATHA, Gippsland — 24 games
Holds the longest winning record in the state on the back of a dominant 2022 season so far. They remarkably sit four-and-half games clear at the top of the ladder. That’s despite suffering some scares along the way. The Parrots last lost on June 19 last year.
ARARAT EAGLES, Mininera and District — 20 games
Made headlines for all of the wrong reasons in 2019 after losing a game by over 500 points but they’ve completed the most remarkable of turnarounds to find themselves in premiership contention. They’ve conceded just 396 points in 14 games this season.
FRANKSTON DOLPHINS, Southern — 19 games
Flying in Division 4 of the Southern league and it’s hard to see who will stop them. Coach Richard Mathers has 79 goals for the season. Carrum Patterson Lakes were the last side to get the better of the Dolphins.
LANGWARRIN, Mornington Peninsula — 19 games
The Kangaroos streak started after winning the last two games of the 2021 season and they’ve kicked on since. Former Essendon man Mark Baguley has impressed and played a key role in the club’s recent success.
BAMBILL, Millewa — 18 games
They’ve kicked a score of over 200 this season on five occasions highlighting the powerful unit that they are. It’s almost impossible to not see Bambill winning the flag. Last lost to Nangiloc.
POINT COOK CENTRALS, Western Region — 18 games
A dominant team who have been on a winning run since the beginning of the season after some heavy off-season recruiting. Results in the back half of the season have been much closer winning two games by just four points.
NEERIM SOUTH, Ellinbank and District — 17 games
The run started at the beginning of the season and the club has since gone onto sit three games clear at the top of the ladder.
WAVERLEY BLUES, Eastern — 15 games
The Division 3 club has the longest winning streak in the Eastern league club right now. They haven’t lost since Round 1 when they went down to top-four outfit Warrandyte by two points. The Blues sit top of the ladder (15-1) and are chasing their first flag since 2008. They played in the grand final in 2019.
ECHUCA, Goulburn Valley — 15 games
Won their first game of the season but were stripped of the points due to an administration error and have since powered away to be premiership favourite.
CHELTENHAM, Southern — 15 games
Dropped its first two games of the season and have been in devastating form since. Powered to a 105-point thumping of Port Melbourne Colts on the weekend to move two games clear at the top of the ladder.
ELTHAM, Northern — 15 games
The Panthers are thriving at the top of the ladder in Division 2 to have rightly earned the label of premiership favourite. During this run they’ve even proven too good in close games.
HEIDELBERG, Northern — 14 games
Heidelberg sits three games clear at the top of the Division 1 ladder having not lost since Round 3 when it went down to Montmorency in a thriller by a point. They’re also comfortably the best defensive team in the division.
KEILOR PARK, Essendon District — 14 games
Hold the longest winning run in the Essendon District league having not suffered defeat since Round 1. Along the way, the Devils have easily accounted for second placed Oak Park twice.
Longest losing streaks
WESTERN RAMS, Riddell District — 52 games
It’s been a difficult time for the Rams who lasted tasted success when they beat Broadford, who have since moved onto the Outer East competition, by 41 points in 2018. The club has also undergone a name change since then having previously been known as Rockbank.
PORTARLINGTON, Bellarine — 50 games
The Bellarine club has struggled in recent seasons and most recently won on July 28, 2018. There were some positives earlier this month when Melbourne champion Nathan Jones played for the club as part of the Carlton Draft series kicking two goals.
LONGWOOD, Kyabram District — 33 games
In one of the Goulburn Valley’s smaller competition it has been a tough time for the Redlegs. Their last win game against Ardmona in 2019, a club who went into recess for 2022. There was something to cheer about on the weekend with three-time Geelong premiership star Cam Mooney turning out for the club.
CARNGHAM LINTON, Central Highlands — 33 games
They’ve come close on a couple of occasions since their last win against Skipton but the wait continues to go on.
BELGRAVE, Outer East — 32 games
The Division 1 club’s run extends back to a six-game losing streak to close out the 2019 season where Belgrave’s last win came over Warburton Millgrove who finished that year bottom of the ladder. Celebrated its 1000th senior match at the weekend.
WEST FOOTSCRAY, Western Region — 32 games
If relegation was possible at the end of 2021, this drought may have been over. The Roosters last tasted success in 2019 against Newport in a season where they won five games.
ANAKIE, Geelong and District — 31 games
The past few years has been a difficult period for the Roos who have not won since August 2019. They lost to fellow strugglers Corio earlier this year in a missed opportunity to end the losing streak.
JACANA, Essendon District — 30 games
Despite the losing streak continuing in 2022, Jacana has shown plenty of improvement having been forced into recess during 2019. The Jags last win came against Keilor Park.
ST ALBANS, Geelong — 29 games
St Albans horror run started at the beginning of last year after it had claimed the final two games of 2019.
MERINGUR, Millewa — 28 games
Lost the last four games of the 2019 season which started this unfortunate streak.
