Cranbourne's Marc Holt kicks goal 1000

CRANBOURNE’S 1000-goal footballer has revealed what the milestone means to him, named his all-time favourite teammates and still vividly recalls his first goal.

Marc Holt stormed into community footy record books on July 28, just days after a six-week ban for striking was lifted, enabling him to realise his dream this season.

Holt was in a relaxed mood when he spoke to Leader two days after slotting his 1000th last week.

Leader: What’s reaching the milestone mean to you?

Holt: “I never thought it was that big of a deal as I was approaching it. As it happened you realise how many people are affected by it, how excited they get and how proud they are of you, so it gets a bit more meaningful when you are there … It’s good to make people happy.”

Leader: Do you remember your first goal for Cranbourne?

Holt: “We were playing Devon Meadows at Devon and I think it was my first senior game. I was 16 I think. I’d done my ‘deb’ the night before for my school. I was in year 10, I would have been 16.”

Leader: Were you the same sort of player back then as you are now?

Holt: “When I was at Stingrays I started off as a centre half-back, I played the first eight games at centre half-back and then went to centre half-forward and then got named in the TAC Cup team of year at centre half-forward. From then on I was known as a forward. I was definitely not a goalkicking forward because I couldn’t kick for crap. Over the years I went further towards the goal square.”

Leader: What’s your take on Cranbourne possibly coming into the MPNFL next season?

Holt: “I’m all for it. I think it would be good for us and it would be good for their league as well I think, they’d get a bit of different competition.”

Leader: What are your plans for next season?

Holt: “I have no plans for next year yet. I’m definitely just getting through this year. I still have to get surgery at the end of the year. I’ve still got a rod and all the screws in my leg from when I broke it. I still get swelling and pain from them. I’m going to get them taken out and see how I go in recovery from that.”

Leader: Will you coach one day?

Holt: “I do have a lot that I know. I’m definitely not ready to coach but it is something that I’d be interested in later on. But I definitely want to be finished playing and maybe just help out a club for a while before I took over. It would have to be the right timing and right club also.”

Leader: What’s it been like being a part-owner of star racehorse Jungle Edge?

Holt: “He’s a ripper. It’s been awesome. We got him two years and I think he’d won about 80 grand. He’s won over a million since we’ve had him. I’m very lucky to be a part of it.”

Leader: Who are some of the best players you’ve played with?

Holt: “Justin Berry was really good to watch, he came across to us from VFL … the way he tackled and smothered, I appreciated that more than his skills … he was just another level. Matty Thompson, I’d say he was the most courageous and the hardest player I’ve seen and really underrated. I wish more people had have seen him play more games. And probably my brother, Leigh.”

Leader: The best fullbacks who have played on you?

Holt: “There are some good fullbacks out there. (Pakenham’s) Nathan Brown was always a great challenge. He worked in synch with Jarred Goldsack. Me and (Lee) Boyle (Narre Warren) have had some good contests.”

Leader: When you eventually do retire, will you walk away satisfied with what you’ve achieved?

Holt: “I’ve done the best I could with work and the way I live my life, I’ve definitely got the best out of it. I probably could have done more fitness wise and trained more but I’m happy, that’s the main thing.”
