CRANBOURNE coach Steve O’Brien conceded part of him felt sorry for Doveton after his Eagles dished out a 211-point belting in the SEFNL on Saturday.
O’Brien’s high-flying Eagles went on a goal-blitz — spearhead Marc Holt firing off 10 goals (to move within 13 of 1000 goals for Cranbourne) in a 35.21 (231) to 3.2 (20) rout at Casey Fields.
“Yeah I did (feel sorry for Doveton), probably post game,’’ O’Brien, a former Doveton coach, said.
“During the game I was focused on my boys. But when you sat back and looked at it after the game, yeah, unfortunately they’re not in a good place, are they?’’
VFL-listed pair Nathan Gardiner (Frankston Dolphins) and Anthony Vella (Port Melbourne) booted five goals apiece in the rout, while defender Brandon Wapshott was named best-afield.
Cranbourne was already 89 points ahead when it unleashed a dazzling third quarter, kicking 11.5 to the Doves’ one behind. Cranny finished off with a 10-goal final term.
“It wasn’t so much about the score we were focusing on,’’ O’Brien said. “We had some KPIs that we wanted to meet and we were able to achieve all of them. The rest looked after itself, really.’’
As for Holt nearing a grand of goals, O’Brien said: “It’s going to be a big moment. He’s in pretty good nick, he was marking everything. He’s getting right up towards his best form, which is pretty exciting for us.’’
