MPFNL: Ambulance called after young player injured in Division 2

The MPFNL match between Edithvale-Aspendale and Rye was called off with minutes remaining after a first-gamer was injured and required an ambulance.

The Edithvale-Aspendale versus Rye match was called off with eight minutes to go on Saturday after Rye first-gamer Bailey Thompson was concussed and an ambulance was called.

Edi-Asp was leading 21.27 (153) to 7.3 (45) at the time and took the four points.

Thompson, 19, was taken to hospital and released after two hours.

“Just for precaution they didn’t want to move him,” Rye football manager Scott Beel said.

“They called an ambulance and as it was going to take 30 to 40 minutes, they called the game off.”

An eight-goal opening quarter to Edi-Asp set up the thumping 108-point win.

The Eagles forward line had options aplenty, with Mick Meehan kicking seven goals and Campbell Ak and captain Nick Carlon three apiece.

Hugo Clarke, Kyle Yorke, Steven Mannix and ruckman Alexander Browne were also named in the best for Edi-Asp.

For Rye, Dylan Allen, Adam Kirkwood and Tom Hughes tried hard but the Demons sorely missed Billy Hartung (hamstring) and Campbell Robbins (concussion).

Hartung hasn’t played since Round 2 on April 15.

“We are playing six to eight Under 19s each week,” Beel said.

“We have 35 under 19s on our list. The future is bright. We just need a few older heads and big blokes.

“The scores don’t reflect it, but a win is just around the corner.

“We are playing a good two or three quarters but just falling away each game in one or one and a half quarters.”

An ambulance was called to Devon Meadows after Meadows reserves captain Daniel Tocknell collided with the fence in a tackle at about 1.55pm on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the final minute of the reserves match between Devon Meadows and Hastings.

Tocknell was concussed and taken by ambulance to Frankston hospital.

An hour-long delay caused the seniors match to be abandoned without it starting.

Devon Meadows president Chris Langley said Tocknell was talking to club medical staff before being transported to hospital.

Tyabb co-coach Matt Haverfield praised his side’s inner strength after it gripped on to beat Pearcedale by nine points, 12.9 (81) to 10.13 (72) at Bunguyan Reserve.

“Resilience and belief got us over the line,” Haverfield said.

“Pearcedale hit the front in the last quarter but we dug in and didn’t roll over and kicked the last three goals of the game.”

Tyabb gun Dale Sutton was everywhere and racked up a heap of possessions while captain Will Hose in his 50th game didn’t lose a contest all day.

Unsung Mark Banham did a super role for the Yabbies which was pivotal in their win.

Corey Buchan and Ethan Rahilly were both courageous down back all day.

“We haven’t lost at home this year and it was great for the supporters and community to get the win over a quality rival,” Haverfield said.

Mandrez Manu slotted five goals to fire Chelsea to an 85-point win over Seaford, 17.22 (124) to 6.3 (39). The Seagulls kicked six goals in the second and fourth quarters to bank their third successive win. Jack Wallace capped a best-afield display with two goals, while Shaun Foster, Jacob Spasevski, Will Barker and Oliver Struve were also named in the best. Jack Lonie and Harrison Forbes kicked two goals each for Seaford.

Mornington scored a hard-fought 19-point win over Crib Point, 10.11 (71) to 7.10 (52), with Jarrod Hicks, Adrian Speedy, Jake Smart and James Cameron showing the way. “It was great to bounce back,’’ Bulldogs playing-coach Josh Newman, who returned to the side after missing his side’s loss to Hastings the previous week with a calf strain, said.
