A convicted sex offender refused to notify police that he had changed address, using forged documents to secure high-end Melbourne short-stay apartments as he played a cat and mouse game with investigators.
Simon Simoudis, 36, pleaded guilty at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to multiple failing to comply with sex offender reporting obligation charges.
Simoudis, who was convicted for using a service to groom a child, led investigators on a merry dance as he skipped from apartment to apartment without notifying police of his whereabouts.
A condition of sex offender registration is to notify authorities of any change of address, the court was told.
Simoudis’ hide and seek with police kicked off after authorities received a tip-off the sex fiend was living at a luxury St Kilda Rd property in October last year.
The court heard Simoudis’ romp ended after he used forged documents and references to secure an inner-city apartment via upmarket Airbnb-type company Luxico.
Luxico, which markets itself for the rich, greenlit Simoudis to rent the inner-city apartment.
Simoudis, who also pleaded guilty to produce false document, caused major issues for apartment’s owners and other tenants shortly after he arrived in April this year.
Luxico, which markets itself for “rock stars, families and anyone who loves being treated like a VIP”, approved Simoudis’ tenancy application in March this year.
Simoudis presented himself to Luxico as a healthcare professional with “exemplary references” who purported to be a Mayne Pharma employee.
The owners authorised Mr Simoudis, who claimed to be in Melbourne for work, to move in on a three-month term.
“Mr Simoudis made our lives and the lives of other tenants in the building hell … with all-night parties …,” a spokesperson for the owners said.
The owners also claimed Simoudis allegedly caused property damage and stole items.
The spokesperson, who visited the property after suspecting something was wrong, was “stunned” when they spotted “high-profile” convicted drug queen Tess Rowlatt at the apartment.
“I said ‘you’re that criminal Tess Rowlatt’ when I saw her … I recognised her immediately,” the spokesperson said.
Simoudis, who the court heard was a “small-time drug dealer”, was dobbed in to cops after the owners spotted “suspicious activity” at their apartment.
The building manager also dobbed in Simoudis after two unknown men kicked in the apartment door, rushed in then left 90 seconds later, the court was told.
The court heard people came and went from the apartment at all hours and Simoudis was spotted stashing a black bag in bushes outside the building on regular occasions.
Police attended the apartment multiple times and seized suspected stolen corporate documents, cocaine, MDMA and meth.
Police also discovered documents with Rowlatt’s name at the property, the court was told.
Simoudis, whose tenancy ended on July 2, was arrested after moving on to his fiance Alex Talpau’s Southbank apartment just eight days later.
Simoudis and Mr Talpau were also charged with major offences including trafficking a commercial quantity of meth and 1,4 butanediol and trafficking cocaine, ketamine and MDMA.
Lawyers for Simoudis told the court their client had put in a plea offer to the alleged drug offending which was under consideration and likely to be finalised before the next date.
Simoudis also blabbed to police his alleged drug supplier was Angelo Gargasoulas — the brother of Bourke St Mall mass murderer James Gargasoulas.
The revelation was aired last Thursday during an open court hearing for Mr Gargasoulas who was charged with drug trafficking and drug possession.
Simoudis, who also pleaded guilty to leaving a trail of city parking fines via a hire vehicle, will be sentenced on Thursday.
Rowlatt, 35, made headlines after she was done for a major meth and drug dealing operation.
The party girl was sentenced in the County Court in February to time served – 419 days – after pleading guilty to trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs.
Rowlatt became the focus of a targeted operation conducted by the Victoria Police Major Drug Squad who arrested the drug queen at Upper West Side Spencer St apartment in October 2021.
Mr Gargasoulas and Mr Talpau will front court at a later date.
