The charges related to two cases including one when the man in his 70s began teaching at Beaumaris Primary.

It was there he indecently assaulted one of his Grade 5 students at least seven times.

The victim, who cannot be named, believed other students would have seen what was going on but he did not discuss it with anyone at the time.

The man, who stopped teaching at Beaumaris Primary in the early 1970s, also fronted court over an earlier offence he committed while working at another Victorian school.

He raped and molested a male teenage cadet while teaching at Warragul Technical School in the 1960s.

Both of the victims came forward and reported what happened to them to the Royal Commission into Institutionalised Sexual Abuse.

They both made statements to Victoria Police in 2014.

The man has a long history of offending.

He served jail time in NSW for sexual offending against a boy who was aged between 13 and 16 and has convictions for multiple other indecent assaults.

He was last month sentenced to three years in prison with two years of the sentence suspended for three years.

He had spent five months in pre-trial detention at the time of sentencing.

What happens in a criminal trial?

County Court Judge Michael O’Connell found it significant that the man had completed a Sex Offender Intervention Program while in custody in NSW.

A psychological report prepared for the court stated he represented a low risk of reoffending sexually.

However, Judge O’Connell determined it was appropriate to impose a term of imprisonment, which was partially suspended.

“The sentence must nonetheless denounce what you did to these boys as they were then and mark the impact it has caused,” he said.

“I will declare that you have been sentenced as a serious sexual offender in respect of both of these charges and I will direct that declaration be noted in the records of the court.”

The man will be required to report under the Sex Offender Registration for the remainder of his life.
