Driver who crashed into a light pole and then registered .262 was so drunk she fell off police chair

A five-times over driver who crashed into a light pole was so intoxicated that she couldn’t walk without police help.

An extremely drunk driver who smashed her car into a light pole and then blew more than five times over the limit was so inebriated she couldn’t walk or talk.

She registered .262, and was so heavily intoxicated that she was unable to stand up or speak properly, a court has heard.

Arresting officers were so concerned for her safety they kept her in custody until she sobered up. On one occasion she fell off a chair in a police interview room.

THREE POT DREAMER DRINK DRIVER BLEW .136

Romayne Veronica Van Cuylenberg, 52, pleaded guilty to range of charges including careless, drink and suspended driving, as well as breaching court orders, at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The self-confessed alcoholic, who was already serving a community corrections order for similar offending, was told she was likely to be jailed.

The court heard on April 24 a witness watched Van Cuylenberg veer across Scott St, not far from her Caulfield South home, and smash into the pole, knocking it to the ground.

Police were called and arrived while she was still in the driver’s seat.

She had slurred speech and struggled to walk without police assistance, although she did manage to tell officers she had drunk six glasses of red wine after spending the afternoon boozing with pals.

She admitted she had been “stupid” to drive while so drunk, especially as she knew she was suspended from driving, but needed to pick up food for her son.

The court heard this crash was only a few days after the same court had disqualified her from driving for two years.

Her defence lawyer said it was quite clear she had a “huge problem with alcohol”, and this accident was a “cry for help”.

He said she had been to a rehab clinic in NSW and didn’t drink at all now.

Magistrate Jade Bott said the offending was extremely serious and there were a number of aggravating features involved.

Ms Bott said she was considering a custodial sentence to be followed by a corrections order.

Van Cuylenberg was bailed until April 8 on condition she didn’t drive or consume alcohol.
