AN ALLEGED drug trafficker caught with more than 30g of ice and nearly $30,000 in cash has been warned he could face 18 months in jail, a court has heard.

When Jay Cameron McLeod’s Bentleigh East home was raided by police, officers allegedly found stashes of drugs and money.

The 27-year-old appeared in Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on November 15 on a charge of trafficking.

His lawyer asked for a sentence indication, but when she was told Mr McLeod would be behind bars for a long time, she entered a not guilty plea.

The court heard about 7.40am on September 19 this year drug investigators went to Mr McLeod’s Bentleigh East home.

There they allegedly found drugs and money in various rooms around the property.

They say they came across two bags of ice, one with 28.3g in it, valued at $6500, and a second with 5.7g, worth around $2500, a small bag of cannabis and a container of GHB.

They also allege they found a bundle of notes hidden behind a TV cabinet, which turned out to be $26,950, and a further total of $525 in two different places.

Three mobile phones, prescription medication and a stolen motorbike were also allegedly found there.

His lawyer requested a sentence indication, saying he had already spent 57 days in custody.

She said it was “not at the top end” of trafficking, and Mr McLeod should be immediately released and then would be able to do a community correction order.

She told the court he had been using drugs to block out the grief of his father’s death, and had become addicted to ice.

But magistrate Thomas Barrett indicated a corrections order would be too lenient.

He said if Mr McLeod did plead guilty, he would sentence him to 18 months in jail, with a non-parole period of 12 months.

Mr McLeod refused that indication and his lawyer said he would be contesting the charge.

His case was adjourned until December 13.
