Ice-addicted 26-year-old Jye Twyford jailed for seven months jail for southeast crime sprees

A HOMELESS ice addict sentenced to seven months’ jail for an array of drugs and theft charges had an 18-page rap sheet that included scores of arrest warrants, plus multiple breaches of community corrections orders and failures to answer bail.

What happens in a criminal trial?

AN ICE addict with an 18-page rap sheet — including 47 warrants — lived a life of crime to feed a daily drug habit, a court has heard.

Jye Twyford pleaded guilty to an array of drugs and theft charges at Frankston Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard Twyford, who was homeless, has already racked up an extensive list of convictions, despite being only 26 years old.

The father of three has priors for theft, burglary, drug possession, dishonesty and assault, had 47 warrants out for his arrest, had failed to answer bail 21 times and breached three community corrections orders.

He was finally arrested by a canine unit in November last year.

The court heard Twyford admitted he used “as much (ice) as he could get his hands on”.

In November he and accomplices were seen by police in Seaford travelling in a BMW and a Ford with stolen numberplates.

They pulled over at a Frankston North service station, and Twyford got out and tried to steal a Holden, but failed.

Police boxed in the BMW but the driver — not Twyford — accelerated and rammed two police vehicles, causing extensive damage to the cars and injuring two officers, and sped off.

Twyford ran away, but was soon caught by the dog unit hiding in a nearby yard.

He was aggressive throughout the arrest; he had to be physically restrained at the scene and back at the station he damaged an interview room.

He gave a “no comment” interview and refused to name the BMW driver.

Earlier in the year he had been involved in drug possession and weapons offences in Hastings and criminal damage crimes in Baxter.

His defence lawyer said Twyford being on remand had been a wake-up call for him.

Magistrate Dominic Lennon said his continued criminal behaviour “tested the patience of the court”.

Twyford was sentenced to seven months in jail, minus 73 days he has already served.

An appeal has been lodged.
