SAM Jones finds himself quickly racing up the VSDCA leading wicket-takers tally this season.

Jones claimed his maiden five-wicket haul on Saturday in just his third First XI game, picking up 5-40 off his nine overs.

But the Englishman’s figures were not enough to give Kew the six points after Ivanhoe sprung a surprise upset victory at Ivanhoe Park.

Saints captain Raza Rizwan put in a man of the match performance, logging his fourth half-century of the season to go with figures of 3-13 off seven overs to give his side a 39-run win.

Jones started the season in the Second XI but his right-arm off-spin has already claimed 12 wickets in three First XI games to place him fifth on the North/East leading wicket-takers table.

He ran through Ivanhoe’s middle-order, taking five wickets in the space of 32 runs to drag Kew back into the contest after the home side made a flying start.

“Ever since he has come into the First XI he’s been a revelation,” Kew captain Chris Weeks said.

“Varies his pace very well, not a big turner of the ball but just varies his pace, which is very handy on the wickets we play on.

“Bit of a reward for him to get five-for because he’s probably been a bit unlucky in the last couple of weeks. A couple of dropped catches and a couple of decisions didn’t go his way so he could have easily had a couple of five-fors.”

Weeks said he had not been surprised by Jones’ impact since coming into the side in Round 4.

“He got here pretty early in the pre-season so he did a bit of work throughout the pre-season and got his opportunity and he has definitely taken it,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone. All we needed for him to do was come in and contribute and he’s led the attack since he’s come in.”

Rizwan topscored with 51 at first-drop after Ivanhoe openers Tom Corrie (40) and James Hopkins (43) made use of the batting-friendly conditions to put on an 80-run stand for the opening wicket.

Together the trio lifted the Saints to 9-193 from its 45 overs before Kew was bowled out for 154.

The result gave Ivanhoe its second win of the VSDCA North/East season and dropped Kew to a 4-2 record.
