TWO brilliant run outs helped Camberwell Magpies to consecutive wins for the first time this Premier Cricket season after a five-wicket victory over Ringwood on Saturday.

Star batsman Ian Holland and David King were both run out as the Rams were dismissed for 189, before the Magpies chased down the total with 23 balls to spare.

Ben Rowles had Holland removed for 1 in the first over of the day after a diving direct hit from behind square leg, with Will Walker then reducing Ringwood to 2-3 when he bowled Jo Loorham (2) with his first ball.

King and Nathan Walsh put on a 139-run partnership for the third wicket but the rearguard stand was ended when Andrew Fekete completed a neat piece of fielding from mid-wicket.

Fekete had King run out when he threw down the stumps from mid-wicket after completing his delivery, with Ringwood losing its last eight wickets for 47 runs to be all out for 189.

King (58) and Walsh (89) both recorded half-centuries but Jackson Freeman (10) was the only other batsman to reach double-figures.

Oli Gunning and Simon Hill (42) were the backbone of Camberwell’s chase with an 89-run stand for the third wicket before Gunning and Tom Russ (34) all but sealed the win with a 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Gunning’s hand of 69 was his highest First XI score, stroking 5 fours off 114 deliveries.

Camberwell coach Brad Loveluck said the Magpies fielding was “exceptional”.

“I just felt like it was a really good bowling effort from our group … but our fielding was probably the best thing about the display,” Loveluck said.

Andrew Fekete (2-20 off nine overs) and Matt Whittaker (2-15 off six) each picked up two wickets, with Loveluck praising his bowling group’s efforts.

“I thought we were in control the whole time, we bowled really tight lines, even though they got a big partnership together, I felt if it was going to happen it would happen quickly for us,” he said.

“It was obviously really hot and the batters were fatiguing so I didn’t feel like we were looking down the barrel — the most I would’ve thought they’d make was probably 220 the way we were bowling.”

The result lifted Camberwell into the top eight for the first time this season with a 4-1-3 record ahead of the two-day clash against Fitzroy Doncaster at the Sports Ground starting on Saturday.
