Moama’s next step towards the top of the Murray league ladder is complete after former Brisbane Lion Sam Sheldon was named as senior coach for 2022.

The 32-year-old joined the Magpies for the 2021 season after seven years with Goulburn Valley league powerhouse Kyabram.

He played 10 games in his first season in black and white as Moama finished eighth on the ladder — a position which would have earned them a finals birth if the season had not been cancelled.

Sheldon takes over from Luke Eldridge who stood down from the role after three years in charge.

According to club president Matt Lake, Sheldon’s experience stood out from other contenders.

“Everyone is aware of Sam’s experience at AFL level but it’s what he has done at local level which impressed us most,” he said.

“He’s come from a successful environment at Kyabram and he’s excited to build a winning culture with our young group.”

Lake said he expected Sheldon to continue playing despite taking on the extra responsibility, highlighting the experience he had already shown on the field this season.

“Sam said he still has at least a couple of years left,” Lake said.

“That’s only a bonus for us as a club because players of his quality can make a massive difference.

“Our playing group already has high standards of one another and Sam wants to lift it a little bit higher.”

The outgoing Eldridge heads into retirement with his own impressive footballing resume having played over 200 games, won premierships and best and fairests.

Lake said he would always be a “Moama person”.

“He’s done a terrific job for us especially the last two years which have been hard for everyone,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing him among the crowd on a Saturday heading into next season.”
