The architect behind one of country Victoria’s greatest footy teams is back in the hot seat.
Kyabram Football Club has announced three-time premiership coach Paul Newman will return to the role of senior coach for the 2022 season.
Newman, who oversaw the club’s remarkable 83-1 run between 2016 and 2019, returns after two years away from the game.
He will replace co-coaches Brad Edwards and Mick Mattingly, who will join North Adelaide in the SANFL.
“I’ve got the fire back in my belly to coach again,” Newman said.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge which is ahead of us. Watching from afar I’ve been really impressed with how Brad and Mick have handled the situation of the past two years, it wouldn’t have been easy for anyone.
“Hopefully we can get a clean run at it next season.”
In the past two seasons, there has been some new faces introduced to the Bombers’ line-up including Zac Keogh who arrived from Seymour this year.
But familiar faces including Kayne Pettifer are committed to going around in 2022.
“There has been a changing of the guard in some way,” Newman said.
“A lot of younger guys, have been introduced into the senior group, and I’m excited to see what they can do. I’ll put the onus back on them to get the best out of themselves as senior players.
“Kyabram has a proud history of developing home grown talent and I look forward to continuing that.”
Newman will be assisted by Lachie Smith and Billy Barnes, who will make the move from Kyabram District league club Girgarre.
“Both of those guys have fantastic credentials,” Newman said.
“Billy is a great person and footballer. To welcome him into our environment is a huge positive for the club.”
Kyabram president Peter Learmonth said he was excited to see Newman back in the role.
“Paul is a terrific coach and the success he’s had is well documented,” he said.
“Brad and Mick have done a terrific job and we thank them for everything.”
