The son and ex-wife of a notorious rapist who has spent more than a decade in jail for a horrific attack in Shepparton fear he will strike again after he was recently paroled.

Neville Mansfield’s sickening rape and torture of a woman after he gagged and tied up her two children and a babysitter in 1993 made headlines across the state

After entering the house, Mansfield grabbed the son in a headlock and held a knife to his throat before telling the mother: “Do as you are told or he will be hurt. I will slit his throat.”

The mother managed to persuade the intruder to release her son before he fled with some cash after he had gone into rooms looking for valuables.

DNA evidence in 2007 led to a trial, where Mansfield was found guilty of charges including five counts of rape and four counts of unlawful imprisonment.

Mansfield was jailed in 2012 for 16 years with a non-parole period of 12 years after a jury found him guilty of five counts of rape, four of false imprisonment, three of making a threat to kill and one each of indecent assault and aggravated burglary.

Mansfield appealed the conviction and in 2013 received a lighter sentence of 14 years with a non-parole period of 11 years.

His son, also Neville Mansfield, was worried his father had not been rehabilitated and remained a threat to women.

“I fear he gets out he will continue (to assault and hurt women),” Mr Mansfield said.

Mr Mansfield, now 40, was born to rapist father Neville and his mother in the 1980s.

Mr Mansfield settled in Queensland after he grew up in the commission flats of Collingwood and Fitzroy.

Mr Mansfield alleges he is a “rape baby” from his father allegedly raping and assaulting his mother.

“I just don’t want this asshole to ever harm my mum again,” he said.

Neville’s mother, who preferred not to be named, alleged Mansfield “did a heap” to her while they were married and living in Balranald, a country town in NSW 94km north of Swan Hill.

“I got bashed and raped every day,” she said.

“I had to leave my kids with a friend and hitchhike to Melbourne … Then he found me.”

She said “he should have never been released from prison” and was concerned he could harm her.

“Yes, I’m scared as well,” she said when she became aware of her son’s concerns.

“The last time I saw him he wanted to get back with me so now I am worried he’s going to try and find me.”

The victim of the 1993 Shepparton rape hoped Mansfield was rehabilitated.

“I hope he can move away from a life of crime,” she said.

“I hope he’s rehabilitated from his lengthy stay in prison.”

The victim also told the Herald Sun that she had heard Mansfield had committed violent sex crimes before the horrible evening of April 7, 1993.

“I heard he had done this before,” she said.

The victim was sickened when she found out he was up for parole.

“I honestly felt sick that he was going to be out in the community again, but I’ve had to learn not to give it too much thought,” she said.

“He caused so much damage to me and my family.

“It was horrific and I am grateful that I was home to protect my children at the time, and hadn’t left for work like I was supposed to.”

She hoped that no one had to endure what she – and her family – suffered.

“I don’t want anyone else to go through what we went through that day.”

Corrections Victoria confirmed that no one by the name of Neville Mansfield was being held in a Victorian prison.

He was being housed at Port Phillip Prison.
