The widow of an Australian golfer has been inundated with requests for merchandise in honour of her late husband following Lucas Herbert’s US PGA win last week.
Herbert, a 25-year-old young gun from Bendigo, defeated 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed and New Zealand’s Danny Lee by a shot to secure the Bermuda Championship.
While doing so, he wore a Leuk the Duck badge on his hat and had the Challenge mascot as his driver cover.
Since then, Challenge has been inundated with orders for different products of Leuk.
It led to Briony — the wife of the late Jarrod Lyle, who died after a third bout of leukaemia in 2018 at the age of 36 — uploading a video to social media showing off the orders she now has to ship out.
She said she had been swamped since Herbert sunk the winning putt.
“Lucas is out there doing his job and probably doesn’t realise the impact he has had just this week,” she said.
“I’ve got merchandise all throughout my house and we’ve had orders coming in from all across the world.
“It’s amazing that by doing something that simple, people look at what he is wearing and want to know more about it.
“We’re absolutely amazed to see the symbol on the world stage.”
Mrs Lyle said she hoped Herbert’s win would help to raise awareness about Leuk the Duck.
“These sales are important because all of the proceeds go back into Challenge,” she said.
“Leuk the Duck has become a big part of our lives because our girls Lusi and Jemma can pick him out in a crowd.
“It’s something they will always use to identify with their dad.”
Other Australian golfers including Adam Scott have also previously worn the Leuk the Duck mascot in honour of Lyle.
