A Numurkah man accused of an alleged fatal assault of an elderly Strathmerton resident earlier this year has faced court.

Trevor Maskell faced a filing hearing at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon on a single charge of manslaughter after he was re-arrested earlier in the day.

Maskell had previously been charged with assault but had his charges upgraded when a 73-year-old man died in hospital last week following the alleged assault at a Murray Valley Hwy service station in the early hours of August 8.

Maskell’s defence lawyer Susie Crowe made no application for bail on her client’s behalf.

He was remanded in custody and will return to court next year for a committal mention hearing in March.

A 46-year-old Numurkah woman was also arrested the day following the alleged incident and charged with assault.

She was bailed and will appear at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on December 10.

Police do not believe the parties were known to each other and are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
