A Toolamba man wove a “web of deceit” after he ran over a woman with his car twice and lied about how she became seriously injured.

Marc Harrison, 49, was sentenced at Shepparton County Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to assault, making a threat to kill, negligently causing serious injury and failing to render assistance after a crash.

In March 2023, at a Goulburn River campsite Harrison was verbally and physically abusive towards a woman.

He threatened to kill her, pulled her hair and attacked her while she was on the ground.

When she attempted to flee the site on foot he chased her with his car, before she got in her own car and headed towards Melbourne.

While driving along Bridge Rd towards the Hume Hwy she saw Harrison was following her and stopped and exited the car, fearing he would side swipe her.

Harrison stopped his car behind hers, yelled at her, reversed and then drove forward — hitting her as she attempted to get off the road.

She became stuck under the car which Harrison reversed again, running her over a second time.

A witness then saw Harrison try to move the woman off the road who was “obviously injured and screaming in pain”.

He told the witness the woman had been hit by a kangaroo and when triple-0 was called he got in his car and left.

The woman suffered multiple complex fractures to her left leg, a large abdominal wound and a scalp laceration, requiring five surgeries and resulting in chronic pain.

The court heard Harrison “made up other versions” of events to tell police.

Judge Kate Hawkins said Harrison created a “web of deceit” and “cowardly” left his victim on the road.

“You continued to blame the victim and sought to minimise your responsibility,” she said.

Judge Hawkins said Harrison’s apology through his counsel at his plea lacked the “hallmarks of genuine remorse”.

She said until he could demonstrate responsibility for his actions she remained guarded about his prospects for rehabilitation.

Harrison was sentenced to five years and six months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of three years and six months.

He has already served 160 days behind bars.

His licence was cancelled for four years and he was fined $1000 for driving while disqualified.
