The exonerated truck driver who survived a horrible head-on collision which killed an aspiring young model and basketball player was high on ice when the car burst into flames.

Darron Antees, 55, pleaded guilty in the Seymour Magistrates’ Court to driving under the influence of meth, driving while suspended and possessing meth.

Antees, however, was not at fault for the collision which killed 20-year-old Camberwell man Saxon Fernandez.

The investigation by Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives found that Fernandez entered Antees’ lane, causing the collision.

Antees suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision.

The truck driver now living in NSW was dressed in a black suit as he told Magistrate Allison Vaughan he would be pleading guilty to the three charges.

Antees told Ms Vaughan that his licence was suspended due to unpaid fines and he was not aware of the suspension as he had just changed address.

Ms Vaughan told Antees “you must learn from this, the grief and the trauma will have a significant impact on you”.

Ms Vaughan warned Antees that if he continues to drive under the influence of meth, “something similar” will occur.

Saxon was remembered by the Waverley Basketball Association as an “extremely talented player” while DKM Models owner Yvette Stephens said he was an incredible young man “who was adored by many of his colleagues”.
