Tributes flow for Saxon Fernandez killed in Glenburn Crash

The Waverley Basketball Association has gathered to pay tribute to an “extremely talented” player following his death in a horror crash.

The Waverley Basketball Association has paid tribute to Saxon Fernandez after he was tragically killed in a crash in Glenburn.

The club held a minute’s silence for the “extremely talented” player, with friends and family packing out the stadium.

General manager Elias Palioyiannis said Saxon’s death was an “awful tragedy”.

“Saxon was a big part of our club, he was extremely talented and he played with us for a number of years,” Mr Palioyiannis said.

“My condolences go out to his family and friends,” he added.

“It was really nice to see the tribute made from his team last night.

“All of his friends and family came out to pay their respects, they filled out the stands.

“This is a tragic loss and we are offering support at the club to our players during this difficult time.”

The 20-year-old, from Camberwell, has been remembered as a hardworking young man.

He worked as a model for DKM models and played for Central City Breakers Basketball Club and the Elevate League.

He was killed after a truck collided with his car on the Melba Highway about 7.40am on Thursday, November 16.

The impact caused the car to burst into flames.

Saxon died at the scene.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Melba Highway was closed in both directions for a stretch between Glenburn and Yea after the crash.

DKM Models owner Yvette Stephens said Saxon was an incredible young man who had a bright future ahead of him.

“We are all so devastated by this loss. He was adored by many of his colleagues,” Ms Stephens said.

“He was so incredibly talented. Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Ms Stephens said Saxon thrived on working within the entertainment industry.

“Saxon started working with us when he was 17. He was very hardworking.

“He took his work very seriously and he photographed so beautifully. He was always willing to give something a try.

“He also did a lot of extra work on TV shows and played various roles.

“We are all just so heartbroken by this loss. He will never be forgotten.”

Dozens of Saxon’s close friends also paid tribute to him on social media.

One friend wrote on Instagram: “I’m so-so sorry Saxon fly high”.

Another wrote: “Gone but never forgotten rest in peace brother.”

His friends also likened him to a “mentor” and “great mate”.

“RIP you were a great coach,” a close friend wrote on Instagram.

The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.
