Sickening, cowardly attack at Cobram Hotel

The fallout from a savage Cobram pub brawl in which four young goons assaulted two middle aged men has continued as a young concreter’s involvement was heard in court.

Jye Ellis, 20, pleaded guilty in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Friday to affray and assault with company following the savage fight.

On November 11, 2023, Ellis — alongside three other thugs — launched a devastating and vicious attack on Robert McPherson and Dale Curry who were drinking at the Cobram Hotel.

In the terrifying CCTV vision played to the court, Ellis can be seen throwing a chair when the brawl kicks off, before later wrestling and punching Mr Curry.

The court heard Ellis did not contribute to the injury suffered by Mr McPherson, who after being knocked unconscious had a seizure.

Three of the thugs handed themselves into police shortly after the brawl.

Ellis’ lawyer Simon Pogue told the court his client had completed an anger management course and has not associated with the co-accused since his arrest.

Mr Pogue conceded Ellis’ behaviour was “inexcusable, serious and ugly” but said his client had been diagnosed with depression at a young age.

Mr Pogue also told the court Ellis pleaded guilty at an early stage and had stopped using illicit drugs.

Ellis was supported in court by his family and partner.

Cobram's Matthew Eddy was sentenced to four months prison over a cowardly assault at the Cobram Hotel on Saturday November 11, 2023.
Cobram's Matthew Eddy was sentenced to four months prison over a cowardly assault at the Cobram Hotel on Saturday November 11, 2023.

Matthew Eddy, the leader of the assault, was sentenced to four months prison after savagely kicking Mr McPherson in the head while he was getting up.

The court heard the other two co-accused, Joshua Lindberg and Mitchell Blake, also pleaded guilty.
Blake pleaded guilty to affray and unlawful assault.

He was fined an aggregate $1500 and was not convicted.

Lindberg, who had one prior conviction of threatening to kill, pleaded guilty to affray and unlawful assault.

He also was not convicted and made to donate $800 to the court fund.

Magistrate Amina Bhai adjourned Ellis’s matter to take into account a psychological report for the concreter, but noted she could not draw “a connection between mental health and his offending”.

Ms Bhai noted as Blake was not convicted, a similar sentence could be applicable for Ellis.

Ellis will be sentenced on October 28.
