Sickening, cowardly attack at Cobram Hotel

A cowardly Cobram crook’s karate kick in a shocking brawl at a local watering hole knocked his victim unconscious.

Matthew Russell Eddy, 23, was sentenced to four months in prison in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on May 23 after he and others started and finished a shocking skirmish at the Cobram Hotel on November 11, 2023.

Eddy and three others launched a devastating and vicious attack on two men drinking at the local watering hole, Robert McPherson and Dale Curry.

In the terrifying CCTV vision played to the court, Eddy can be seen shaping up to the victims and taking his shirt off.

It was this act that Magistrate Simon Zebrowski said put him in jail, saying “had you not made that decision to return I might have taken a different path” before denouncing Eddy’s behaviour as “senseless and cowardly violence”.

Mr Zebrowski also told Eddy he was incredibly lucky, saying “it is by the grace of god you are not sitting in the dock for a longer sentence”.

Mr Zebrowski warned Eddy he likely would not get many more opportunities in the future, with Eddy having a long list of prior offending, including assault and affray.

The court heard that Eddy was on two counts of bail at the time of the offending and has a history of breaching community corrections orders.

Eddy will serve an 18 month community corrections order upon his release from prison, and will have to undergo treatment for drug abuse and alcohol rehabilitation.

The matters of others involved in the brawl are yet to be finalised.
