A railway worker accused of a savage assault on his colleague following a heated argument at the pub has fronted a NSW court.
Dane Gordon Bunworth, 44, fronted Albury Local Court for a brief mention on May 21.
According to court documents obtained by The Herald Sun, Mr Bunworth, who appeared via video link from custody, faces charges of grievous bodily harm and assault causing actual bodily harm.
On Sunday, March 17, Mr Bunworth was staying at the Thomas Lodge Motel in Tocumwal in NSW while working on the V-Line rail line.
His alleged victim, David Tucker, was staying at the same motel a few doors down.
Both men were working for John Holland Construction and it is alleged that while the two knew each other, they were not friends.
The pair went to Tattersall’s Hotel in Tocumwal that evening, and allegedly engaged in a physical altercation.
The court heard that following the alleged scuffle, Mr Bunworth, suffering from an ankle injury, rang another colleague saying he had been bashed.
Mr Bunworth’s friend picked him up and took him back to his motel room where he saw Mr Tucker having a beer outside his unit, before allegedly proceeding to belt him with a 1.2m long sledgehammer 15 times in the head.
According to court documents, the alleged attack lasted 20 minutes, from 12.20am to 12.40am on Monday, March 18.
He had earlier fronted the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court after being arrested by Cobram police, before being extradited across the border into NSW.
While he is currently living in Fraser Rise, Mr Bunworth has a NSW drivers’ licence, according to court documents issued by the Deniliquin Local Court.
He will next face court on June 4.
