A railway worker allegedly bashed a colleague with a sledgehammer at their motel after an argument at a country pub turned physical.
Dane Gordon Bunworth, 44, of Deniliquin, on Tuesday appeared via video link from Goulburn Valley hospital in Shepparton.
The court heard that on Sunday, March 17, Mr Bunworth was staying at the Thomas Lodge Motel in Tocumwal in NSW while working on the V-Line rail line.
His alleged victim was staying at the same motel a few doors down.
Both the alleged victim and the accused work for John Holland Construction and the court heard that while the two knew each other, they were not friends.
The pair went to Tattersall’s Hotel in Tocumwal that evening, and allegedly engaged in a physical altercation.
The court heard that following the alleged fight, Mr Bunworth, suffering from an ankle injury, rang another colleague alleging he had been bashed.
Mr Bunworth’s friend picked him up and took him back to his motel room where he saw the alleged victim having a beer outside his unit, before allegedly proceeding to belt him with a 1.2m long sledgehammer 15 times in the head.
According to police, Mr Bunworth then packed his things and left, heading in a vehicle towards Victoria.
The injured man was taken to Goulburn Valley Health in Shepparton with severe head injuries and police quickly established a crime scene.
The alleged attack was captured on CCTV and Mr Bunworth was later arrested by Cobram police.
The court heard that NSW police were applying for Mr Bunworth’s extradition
Magistrate Simon Zebrowski on Wednesday approved an order for Mr Bunworth to be extradited from Victoria to NSW.
