Finishing the season as premiers and champions is arguably the greatest feat any side can achieve.

Now we’ve ranked the top-30 country footy teams to have completed unbeaten seasons in the last 25 years.

The rankings are based on the competitiveness of the league, the dominant season and if a team has achieved back-to-back unbeaten seasons, which few teams have done.

Teams who have an unbeaten season with a draw have not been included.

Here is the list.

1. Kyabram 2017 - 21 wins, percentage of 279 per cent

Only one major country team has won back-to-back premierships and done it with unbeaten seasons. The Bombers were unstoppable from 2016 to 2018, losing one game, the 2018 grand final. In 2017, under the pressure of being unbeaten in 2016 and the chasing pack trying to get closer, the Bombers took their game to another level. They were better in attack, in defence and ex-AFL player Kayne Pettifer kicked 88 goals. Only four times all season did Kyabram concede more than 50 points and scored 100 points or more 12 times. Under Paul Newman they were unstoppable.

2. Albury 2016 - 20 wins, percentage of 238 per cent

Good luck stopping any side with ex-AFL players Josh Mellington and Setanta O’Hailpin. Albury won 20 games, including the two finals, with both players combining for 169 goals. Mellington won the goalkicking award with 113. It was one of three unbeaten seasons for the Tigers during a 10-year reign from 2009 to 2018 where the team made grand finals in each year, winning seven premierships.

3. Horsham 2006 - 18 wins, percentage of 257 per cent

Horsham averaged 166 points per game and kicked 171 in the grand final win. They won 18 matches and scored 3001 points. It was also historic with David Johns kicking 156 goals, a Wimmera league record. The premiership was the fourth in a row of 10 straight.

4. Robinvale 2010 - 20 wins, percentage of 372 per cent

For some teams a grand final loss can stay with you for a while, impacting the next season negatively. Kyabram used it as motivation to make it a third unbeaten season in four years. Led by the same core of the previous years, the team were able to go one better and this time beat an Echuca team coached by ex-AFL player Andrew Walker. This time, Kyle Mueller led the goalkicking with 66 as Michael Mattingley won the only best and fairest won by a Bombers player during the era. Kyabram would win all games by more than 15 points and more than 20 against everyone apart from Echuca.

6. Golden Square 2011 - 20 wins, percentage of 266 per cent

Only one game during the season saw the team score below 90 points with league legend Grant Weeks kicking 125 goals.

7. Albury 2009 - 20 wins, percentage of 185

The season which made the Tigers a powerhouse again in the Ovens and Murray. Maffra won three straight premierships from 2002 to 2004 with the last success an unbeaten season. It would be part of a 45-game unbeaten streak. On track to win the 2021 premiership before Covid ended the season, the Parrots made sure in 2022 it didn’t let the opportunity slip. Led by ex-VFL player Aaron Heppell, the team were dominant at times, but also involved in tight contests which could have gone either way. On four occasions the Parrots won by seven points or less, including a four-point win over Wonthaggi in the semi-final.

10. Horsham 2011 - 18 wins, percentage of 237 per cent.

The team also featured a young 15-year-old, Jake Lloyd, who played in his first premiership before he would end up at Sydney.

15. Minyip Murtoa 2019 - 18 wins, percentage of 180 per cent

It’s almost staggering the Kookaburras are on the list. Despite being unbeaten it should have ended multiple times. Five wins were by under 15 points with one of them won by kicking one goal for the game. Minyip Murtoa beat the Horsham Saints 1.8.(14) to 1.3.(9) in one of the lowest scoring games. Led by VFL player Ben McIntyre, who won the league best and fairest, and Brad Inglis, who led the goalkicking with 48, the team would win 18 matches and beat newly joined Southern Mallee Giants to end a 21-year drought.

If Geelong and District teams thought the 2005 Thomson was dangerous, all it had to do was wait until the next year. Led by Thomson club legend Tom Harriott the team went unbeaten in 2006 to win back-to-back titles. The team won 20 to win the premiership and were challenged all the way by Bannockburn. In the preliminary final, they won by 13 points before beating the same team two weeks later by 20 points. The win was part of three premierships won by the club from 2005 to 2008.

Wonthaggi Power won its last premiership in the Alberton league in 2008.

A team so good that during the season it was forced to plan its exit from the Alberton league to the Gippsland league. Wonthaggi joined the Alberton league in 2005 after its two teams in the town merged to form the Power. The Power then won the 2005 and 2006 premiership before losing in the 2007 grand final. A year later, it dominated, winning all 20 games and beating Yarram twice in the finals. It was Wonthaggi’s last premiership before making the move to the Gippsland league in 2010.

Kerang has been a powerhouse of the Central Murray competition for the past decade and a half.
Kerang has been a powerhouse of the Central Murray competition for the past decade and a half.

After losing the grand final to Swan Hill at the end of the 2011 Central Murray season, the Blues decided to use the pain to dominate the opposition in 2012. The Blues won 18 games in a row to win the premiership, led by captain Troy Thamm, who kicked four goals in the final. Only once during the season did they win by under 10 points. It would be the start of one of the most dominant dynasties of country footy with Kerang winning six premierships in a row from 2012 to 2017.

20. Southern Mallee Giants 2017 - 18 wins, percentage of 419 per cent.

A team so good it was forced to move leagues after the grand final win. The club, formed after Beulah and Hopetoun merged, moved to the Horsham District league in 2016 and won every game during the season to win the premiership. In 2017, the team did it again, but on another level. The team conceded less than 36 points a game and averaged more than 150 points. Led by Kain Robins who kicked 117 goals the team were unstoppable all year with only Harrow Balmoral a genuine threat to them. The Giants moved to the Wimmera league in 2018 and have made four grand finals since.

Led by ex-AFL players Andrew Collins and Rick Ladson the 2016 premiership win was a culmination of a period of dominance from the Mean Machine. Bridgewater won its seventh straight premiership in the Loddon Valley league, winning all 18 games during the season. The 50-point win over Mitiamo in the final was the side’s 31st in a row.

The average winning margin was 75 for 2005, compared to 65 in 2004. And Phil Hetherington dominated up forward, kicking 112 goals. By the end of the season the Demons were unbeaten in 40 games. The streak would get to 44 before it ended in 2006.

Bairnsdale won two matches by one point, holding off Lucknow in round one and Wy Yung in round three, before not having trouble the rest of the year to claim premiership glory. The Redlegs were coached by former WAFL player Adrian Bromage.

24. Navarre 2015 - 19 wins, percentage of 281 per cent

Another team who not only went unbeaten in one season but did it twice in a row. By the time the team won the premiership in 2015 the team was on a 40-game unbeaten run. Made up of home-grown players who dominated for the Grasshoppers in juniors in the late 2000s, the team would move to the Maryborough Castlemaine District league in 2011 and work their way to the top. After making the grand final in 2011 and 2012 the team would win four premierships from 2013 to 2016. 2015 continued the success of 2014, where the team went unbeaten, as the team once again went without a loss during the season.

25. Kalkee 2009 - 18 wins, percentage of 377 per cent

Kalkee dominated the 2009 premiership season.
Kalkee dominated the 2009 premiership season.

The Kees won five premierships in a row from 2008 to 2012 but their 2009 win was the most impressive. Kalkee started the season with two 100 plus point wins and had nine for the year. This included a 336-point win against Natimuk. Kalkee then dominated the finals, winning the grand final by 85 points over Harrow Balmoral. Steve Schultz, Grant Schultz and Josh Mibus were named in the Victoria Country team with Schultz winning the best and fairest. Kalkee repeated the unbeaten year in 2010 but had a draw during the season.

26. Tungamah 2015 - 20 wins, percentage of 372 per cent

The best unbeaten season with the longest streak on the line. When Tungamah finished the 2015 season the streak was 48 unbeaten in a row. It would come to an end the following year at the start of the season. The Bears dominated on the scoreboard, averaging more than 168 points a game. Bears forward Ashley Saunders kicked 134 goals during the season to take out the goalkicking award.

27. Gol Gol 2006 - 18 wins, percentage of 362 per cent

A powerhouse of the Millewa league in the early 2000s, winning three straight premierships from 2004 to 2006. Out of the 18 wins in 2006, 11 of them were by 100 points or more, including the grand final win over Cardross. When you consider in 2005 the team went unbeaten and then backed it up in 2006, it’s an impressive achievement.

28. Harrow Balmoral 2024 - 18 wins, percentage of 301 per cent

If doing one season unbeaten wasn’t enough, the Kangaroos decided to make it two in 2024. Led by ex-AFL player Michael Close the side continued its dominance from 2023, winning 18 games during the season. Eight of the wins were by more than 100 points. Despite a challenge by Noradjuha Quantong in the grand final, the Kangaroos prevailed, winning by 14 points. Jai Thompson and Nick Pekin each kicked 50 goals during the season with Thompson also winning the best and fairest.

29. Tungamah 2009 - 20 wins, percentage of 198 per cent

Tungamah won the 2009 Picola league premiership under a new format.

The second time the Bears have made the list. In 2009, the team won back-to-back titles and also completed a second straight year unbeaten. Tungamah also completed the season undefeated after major changes to the year in the off-season with the competition splitting into two divisions. The Bears didn’t have it all their own way with three games decided by less than 20 points.

30. Bonnie Doon 2009 - 18 wins, percentage of 622 per cent

Bonnie Doon Bulldogs won the last Benalla District league title in 2009.
Bonnie Doon Bulldogs won the last Benalla District league title in 2009.

The Bulldogs, who are now called the Bombers after moving to Ovens and King in 2010, are the only team on the list who can lay claim to being the only unbeaten team forever in its competition. Bonnie Doon dominated the last two years of the Benalla District league, winning premierships in 2008 and 2009, both in unbeaten years. 2009 was utter domination, winning 18 matches, including one forfeit, and having a percentage of more than 620, the highest on the list. The Bulldogs kept Swanpool to 33 points in both finals and won the grand final by 93 points. At the end of 2009 the competition folded and Bonnie Doon were forced to go elsewhere. But the last season won’t be forgotten by those who enjoy the serenity.
