Shocking CCTV footage shows two armed offenders attempting to break into a Goulburn Valley home, before the pair are startled by the resident and run away.

At 11.25pm on August 21, two offenders, masked and armed with a machete and a piece of wood, attempted to break into a Patterson St, Shepparton home.

Shepparton detectives have released CCTV as part of their investigation into an attempted home invasion in Shepparton earlier this month.

As they tried to force open the front door, a resident of the home opened it.

The would-be burglars fled the scene in a white SUV.

Police have released CCTV footage of the incident in an attempt to locate the pair.

Police are searching for the two unknown men.

Investigators believe the first offender is a man aged in his late teens or early 20s wearing a striped Everlast hooded jacket, long dark pants, black shoes and holding a machete.

Both the men were carrying weapons and had their faces covered.

The second is also believed to be a man in his late teens or early 20s with a large build, wearing a grey face covering, long dark pants, black shoes and holding a length of wood.
