Angelo Cirillo: Shepparton man pleads guilty to sexual abuse

A former Shepparton tradie told a 13-year-old he thought she had a crush on him before he sexually abused her, a court has heard.

What happens when you are charged with a crime?

A former Shepparton concreter who sexually abused a 13-year-old has fronted court almost two decades after his offending.

Angelo Cirillo, 68, pleaded guilty to one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child in the Melbourne County Court on Wednesday.

The court heard Cirillo sexually abused his teenage victim four times which prosecutor Ruth Champion said raised the “seriousness” of the acts.

Cirillo’s offending started just days after he told the then 13-year-old he believed someone else thought she had a crush on him and tried to kiss her.

The first time he abused her, Cirillo was found laying on top of the teen but said he had fallen.

When he stepped back, he said to his victim “I think you’ve started your monthlies” because she was bleeding.

On New Year’s Eve, Cirillo again assaulted his victim while she was drunk.

Later that night, the victim woke to find Cirillo sexually assaulting her.

He attacked again two months later when he was again seen by a witness who demanded Cirillo stop what he was doing.

He denied the assault and said he was leaning over the victim to get something out of his car.

The offending was reported to police with the victim confronting Cirillo over the offending in a phone call recorded by authorities.

He made statements including “we were together, we done it together” and asked her “can you please not admit it?”.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said Cirillo’s acts made it difficult for help to sleep.

“I live in fear one day this will happen to my daughters,” she said.

Defence lawyer Glenn Casement described his client as someone who had been a “hard worker” before health issues meant he had to give up employment.

Mr Casement said he was still seeking medical reports about Cirillo.

Cirillo remains on bail until the matter returns to court later this year.
