VERMONT

Three drivers were caught in a peak hour pileup in wet weather in Vermont after one drove too closely to the car in front.

The three cars were travelling along Canterbury Rd about 8am on Tuesday, May 28 when the drivers of the first and second car — a Ford Mondeo and a Mazda CV5 — slowed down near Woodcrest Rd because of built-up traffic.

Nunawading highway patrol Senior Constable Adam Helps said the third driver, a 30-year-old Wantirna South woman, who was following too closely behind the cars, slammed her Mazda 3 into the back of the Mazda CV5, pushing it into the Ford Mondeo.

Sen-Constable Slater said her car and the other Mazda were both damaged and had to be towed, while the Ford Mondeo drove off with minor damage.

He said the offending driver was given a fine for following another vehicle too closely.

He reminded drivers to ensure they leave enough room between them and the car in front, and allow extra space when the road conditions are wet.
