Whitehorse Street Watch: Man assaulted with knuckle duster outside cop shop

A man allegedly attacked his sister’s boyfriend with a knuckle duster in front of Forest Hill police station leading to his distressed mother being taken to hospital in an ambulance. That incident leads this week’s crime and traffic report from around Whitehorse.

A family dispute led to a man allegedly assaulting his sister’s boyfriend with a knuckle duster in front of Forest Hill police station and his distressed mother going to hospital in an ambulance.

The 25-year-old Mitcham man had been taken to the station by his mother to discuss a previous assault he was allegedly involved with, when he allegedly carried out the further attack about 9.50pm on Monday.

Sergeant Simon Webb said the man was in the station when he saw his sister and her boyfriend arrive outside.

He said the man then went and got a knuckle duster from his car before using it to punch and attack his sister’s boyfriend outside the station.

Officers rushed outside and separated the pair, arresting the man.

Sgt Webb said the man’s distressed mother had to be taken to Box Hill Hospital in an ambulance, but was not admitted.

His victim was left with minor injuries.

BOX HILL

A couple were held at knifepoint and robbed after they organised online for a man to pick up a printer from their Box Hill accommodation.

Sergeant Simon Webb said a 23-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were staying in an Airbnb rental apartment in Poplar St, Box Hill when they arranged for a man buying a printer from them to pick it up about 10pm on Friday, May 17.

The 24-year-old Emerald man turned up with two other men and made demands before producing a knife.

The man held the pair at knifepoint while his accomplices ransacked the apartment.

They stole electronic items and the couple’s Holden Commodore Calais before leaving.

The pair then walked to Box Hill Hospital, but did not present with any injuries.

They reportedly took a taxi to Carrum Downs before going to Box Hill police station at 5am to report the incident.

VERMONT

A Vermont couple woke to their hall light on unexpectedly during the night and found their Holyrood Drive home had been ransacked as they slept.

Sergeant Simon Webb said the pair woke about 1am on Tuesday, May 21 and found most rooms of the house had been disturbed and their personal items moved around.

Their jewellery box was found lying on the patio while mobile phones had been stolen from the living room.

Sgt Webb said the residents hadn’t seen or heard anything during the robbery.

He said it was likely the burglar hadn’t initially realised anyone was home, having conducted an extensive search and turned on a light.

BURWOOD EAST

About 100 shoppers had to be evacuated from a shopping centre in Burwood East on Monday, May 20 after an escalator caught fire.

Sergeant Simon Webb said the smoke alarm at Burwood One went off about 2.30pm when an escalator’s burnt-out motor caught fire and began filling the centre with smoke.

He said about 100 patrons were evacuated to the carpark while the MFB and police assessed the fire and worked to filter the smoke out of the building.

FOREST HILL

A man was given an unwelcome birthday surprise when he was caught up in three-car smash in Forest Hill on Monday, May 20.

The 27-year-old Carlton man was waiting to turn out of Mount Pleasant Rd onto Canterbury Rd about 6pm when his Mitsubishi Lancer was struck by a Nissan Navara being driven by a 20-year-old Blackburn man.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Webb said the Blackburn man had been driving along Canterbury Rd when he had been hit by a 23-year-old Nunawading woman trying to turn her Honda Jazz right into Mount Pleasant Rd, forcing him into the other victim’s car.

Sgt Webb said only the offending driver received minor injuries and was taken to Box Hill Hospital but not admitted.

She was handed a ticket for failing to give way.

All three cars had to be towed from the crash.
