An eight-year-old girl was among three people hospitalised after a teenager stole a car and caused a three-car crash.

The collision took place in Box Hill South about 1pm on Saturday, May 4, when a 17-year-old girl driving a stolen car turned out of Fulton St into Middleborough Rd without giving way to oncoming traffic.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said a Ford Fiesta being driven south down Middleborough Rd slammed into the turning car, before the impact sent it into the path of northbound traffic, where it was hit by an oncoming Toyota Celica.

The driver of the Toyota, a 47-year-old Mitcham man, was taken to Maroondah Hospital, while his passenger, an eight-year-old girl, was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Both were treated and released later that day.

Sgt Egan said the driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 47-year-old Blackburn South woman, also received minor injuries but was not taken to hospital.

The 17-year-old offending driver was taken to Box Hill Hospital with injuries and was discharged on Tuesday morning.

Sgt Egan said police took the girl straight from the hospital to a magistrates’ court, where she pleaded guilty to two vehicle-related offences.
