A self-confessed “mongrel doctor” who has been working at Box Hill Hospital since January and whose online rants against women, include the comment “some women deserve to be raped”, has been suspended

Dr Christopher Kwan Chen Lee made the derogatory comments while working at Tasmanian hospitals.

At his hearing with the Medical Board of Australia in Hobart earlier this month, Dr Lee admitted to posting comments such as “she needs to be abandoned in India and repeatedly raped” and “If my marriage fell apart, it would not end in divorce. It would end in murder” on internet forums.

“Some women deserve to be raped, and that supercilious little b*tch fits the bill in every way,” he wrote.

“With her suicide, nothing of value would be lost.”

The board handed him a six-week suspension and demanded he undertake education on ethical behaviour and communications, particularly in the use of social media.

Eastern Health was flooded with complaints for employing Dr Lee after the Medical Board of Australia found the 31-year-old committed “professional misconduct” on multiple occasions between 2016 and 2018.

At the hearing, Chairman Robert Webster said Dr Lee had said he “was relatively young and inexperienced” when he made the comments online.

“(Dr Lee) says they were not made in the context of patient care and he has not allowed his views to ever colour his care of patients,” Chairman Webster said.

Yet in an online forum back in 2016 Dr Lee was reported as having freely shared that he was a medical practitioner with “a foul mouth”.

“My online personality is exactly the same as my offline one,” he wrote.

In an online profile in January 2018 he described himself as a “mongrel doctor”.

Knox Private Hospital director of emergency medicine training Dr Jayantha Weeraratne wrote a letter to Medical Board of Australia saying Dr Lee had “excellent knowledge, clinical skills, patient care and advocacy and leadership” after having observed his work.

Dr Weeraratne was said to have attended a previous conciliation hearing with Dr Lee, being fully aware of his online conduct.

Eastern Health chief medical officer Dr Alison Dwyer said the health service complied “with all findings of the Medical Board of Australia and will comply with the findings of the tribunal regarding Dr Christopher Kwan Chen Lee”.

Dr Dwyer said Eastern Health had initiated a “a review into the implications of the tribunal findings for Dr Lee and Eastern Health”.

“Dr Lee will not be returning to work until completion of this investigation.”

“At Eastern Health we value diversity, inclusivity and living together respectfully and do not tolerate disrespectful comments or racism in any form.”
