The Glen shoppers pick Christmas carols, Black Friday offers

In an Australian first, customers will be able to play DJ from their phones as they do their Christmas shopping at a centre in Melbourne’s east. With more than 1000 carols and songs to pick from, this is how it will work.

The Glen's cocktail party with Santa

Get your Christmas shopping done to the beat of your favourite carols at a shopping centre in Melbourne’s east.

The Glen is giving shoppers control of the tunes played at the centre as part of its Christmas celebrations, which also include a free cocktail party with Santa — because Christmas isn’t just about children.

From Friday, customers will easily be able to access the centre’s jukebox on their phones, where more than 1000 Christmas carols will be available to choose from.

There’ll be something for everyone according to the centre’s marketing manager Tiffany Ellul, with songs ranging from the modern hits, to classic Christmas carols and Aussie favourites you’d expect to hear at Carols by Candlelight.

“I’m sure everyone’s favourite Christmas carol will be on there,” she said.

And there will even be a few non-Christmas songs available to cater for any grinches.

Ms Ellul said the process of selecting a song would be as quick and easy as possible, with shoppers only having to scan a QR code or to visit the centre’s website to find where to nominate their song choice.

On the website, customers will be able to see the next three songs in the queue.

Ms Ellul said she wasn’t sure how long it would take for customers to hear their choice, having no idea how in-demand the service would be, with it being the first time the technology would be used in Australia.

“We’re hoping everyone gets to hear their Christmas carol,” she said.

“And we’re very excited to see which ones are the most popular.”

“I have a sneaky suspicion the most popular might be Mariah Carey.”

The Glen Waverley shopping centre is also helping adults get into the Christmas spirit by hosting a free cocktail party with Santa.

From 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Friday, November 29, free cocktails will be on offer to over 18s who want to party with Santa outside the David Jones store.

And cocktails won’t be the only giveaway available on Friday — which is also the day of global retail event Black Friday.

Free black bubble tea will be available at Gotcha Tea from 5pm to 9pm, while customers will be invited to roll giant black dice from 3.30pm 8.30pm to win prizes.

The Glen is also offering photo sessions with Santa throughout December — for shoppers and their pets — and will have live Christmas performances in centre next month.

Customers will be able to DJ their favourite Christmas tracks right up until Christmas Eve, when the centre will be open from 7am to 6pm.
