A troubled teen who stole his grandmother’s car told police he was “bored” when he decided to take the car out for a spin.
The 15-year-old fronted court yesterday where he was given a diversion after taking his grandmother’s car for a joy ride on November 24. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Michael Kaye told the court the boy was arrested in an inner Melbourne suburb a few hours after the car was reported missing. He also told the court the boy was carrying a knife in his pocket when he was arrested by police. When asked by police during his arrest what he was doing with the car and the knife, Sen-Constable Kaye told the court the boy said: “I was bored, I wanted to have a little fun” and “it’s just a small fruit knife”. The magistrate ordered the boy to undertake an eight-week diversion plan.

A 14-year-old girl was bailed after she was arrested on January 17 while allegedly driving a stolen car near a northern suburbs shopping centre. Police pulled up behind the car at a red traffic light and walked to the driver’s side where they knocked on the window and asked the girl to pull over. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, allegedly refused to pull over and tried to drive away, forcing the police officer to run after her and smash the window of the car with his baton. The girl stopped the car and was arrested by police. The court heard she was on bail at the time of the alleged offence for an alleged armed car jacking. She was bailed to start school next week and is due to appear at court again later this month.

Andrew Davis, 37, of Epping was released from jail by the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on January 20 after he pleaded guilty last week to stealing 10 cars during a three-month crime spree between June and August last year. The court last week heard Davis has a history of using drugs including heroin and methamphetamine and was released from jail without community support earlier last year. His lawyer last week asked the court to release her client on bail so he could attend a rehabilitation centre in Richmond in the hope it would help break the cycle of his offending. Magistrate Ian Alger noted on January 20 Davis had spent 147 days in pre-sentence detention since his arrest in August. He deferred the matter and bailed Davis to appear at court for sentencing in three months.
