A troubled teen involved in a sickening brawl at a 14th birthday party where two youths were punched, kicked and stomped on, has been granted bail.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on January 16 and spent just a few hours behind bars before a children’s court magistrate released the teen.

The teen was facing charges of recklessly causing injury, and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

Detective Senior Constable Michelle Belaj told the court the teen and a group of her female friends gatecrashed the party at an RSL on December 14.

The group used the names of people on the guestlist to get in, but were later discovered and asked to leave, Sen-Contable Belaj said.

Outside the venue a girl from the teenager’s group picked a fight with two other partygoers, which led to a brawl, she told the court.

Sen-Constable Belaj said phone footage taken by onlookers, showed the victims being viciously beaten, and their phones stolen before the offenders fled.

“Both victims were thrown to the ground and repeatedly punched, stomped on and kicked,” she said.

“(They) were traumatised by an attack by people unknown to them.”

Sen-Constable Belaj told the court the teen was on bail at the time of the alleged offence for two other alleged violent assaults.

The court heard during both attacks the girl repeatedly punched her female victims to the head.

One victim was punched up to 40 times because the teen thought she’d been the subject of gossip, Sen Constable Belaj said.

She told the court the girl was an unacceptable risk of reoffending if released.

But the teen’s defence lawyer said the girl should be freed because her few hours in custody, her first ever stint behind bars, had left her “shaken”.

The lawyer also said the girl was about to go back to school in a couple of weeks.

“Any time in custody would be significantly onerous,” she said.

Magistrate Stephen Ballek said the girl’s alleged offending was “concerning”, but granted her bail on the condition she adhere to a curfew, live with her mother and not contact her co-accused.

The teen is due back in court next month.
