HOT PROPERTY

A Lilydale man has pleaded guilty to negligently handling stolen goods after he literally bagged himself a steal on Gumtree. Clinton Taylor fronted the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on January 13 where he pleaded guilty to negligently handling stolen goods when he bought a stolen motorbike for $3500 online in 2018. His defence lawyer told the court Taylor thought the number plate, which was altered to display a different registration number, “looked a little dodgy” when he picked up the bike from the unknown vendor. He also said the unusually low sale price, which was half the bike’s actual value, should have tipped him off that something was amiss. But Leading Senior Constable Adrian Batson told the court the bargain was clearly too good to pass up and Taylor walked away with the hot property only to be nabbed by police in November that year. Magistrate Mary-Anne MacCallum convicted Taylor and sentenced him to an adjourned undertaking to be of good behaviour.

CAR THEFTS

Drug user Andrew Davis, 37, of Epping faced the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on January 14 charged with 10 car thefts between June and August last year. Senior Constable Jean-Philippe Britt told the court during Davis’s three month crime spree he stole cars from Ascot Vale, Reservoir, Fawkner, South Morang, Thornbury, Doncaster, Coburg, Eltham North and Templestowe. Davis’s defence counsel told the court Davis had abused drugs, including heroin and methamphetamine, from the age of 15, and was at a loose end after having been released from jail early last year. She said Davis had spent 141 days in pre-sentence detention since being arrested and asked Magistrate Ian Alger to release him on bail to spend time at a rehabilitation clinic. Magistrate Alger adjourned the matter to January 20 when he will make a decision on the bail application.

SPEED DEMON

A lead foot P-plate driver has been told to lift his game when he’s finally allowed back behind the wheel after his driver’s licence was suspended for a year for speeding. Paul Graser, 21, of Pascoe Vale pleaded guilty to driving 110km/h in a 60km/h zone on Pascoe Vale Rd in Glenroy in July last year. His defence lawyer told the court Mr Graser was emotional at the time of the offence because he’d only recently found out his mother had cancer. The lawyer said Mr Graser had committed no prior driving offences and had completed a safe driving course. Magistrate Nahrain Warda told Mr Graser he was lucky he had not killed himself or someone else. Magistrate Warda said there was no reason anyone, particularly a P-plate driver with limited experience, should be travelling at double the speed limit. She suspended Mr Graser’s licence for 12 months without conviction. She also ordered him to adhere to an adjourned undertaking to be on good behaviour.
