Wildlife officers had to euthanise a ringtail possum after it was shot with an arrow, possibly fired by a crossbow, in Croydon.

The marsupial, found on May 5 in Clegg Ave, suffered extensive internal injuries and had to be put down.

State Government wildlife officer Joel Cox said the case was “particularly disturbing and cruel”.

“Possums are one of the few marsupials that have adapted to suburban living and many people enjoy having wildlife around their homes,” he said.

“If people have issues with wildlife, there are alternatives to deter possums instead of harming them.”
