RSPCA data: Whitehorse animal cruelty reports on the rise

Cruelty to animals reports are on the rise in Whitehorse, the latest stats show.
On average, RSPCA Victoria received more than three reports of concern for the welfare of pets in Whitehorse each week, in the year to June 30, 2018.
The local reports totalled 199, ranking the area as the 18th worst spot for animal cruelty reports in Victoria, up from its position as 21 of the 79 council areas last year.

RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker said it was disappointing the most common offence — across Victoria and Whitehorse — was carers failing to provide basic living standards.
“It breaks our heart to see … so many animals that are severely malnourished and ill,” she said.
Across Whitehorse, there were 78 reports of animals without sufficient food, water or shelter and 57 about hygiene, grooming and housing.
Underweight pets were the subject of 27 reports and 38 were for sick or injured pets not receiving treatment.
20 were about pets being beaten and 19 about abandonment.
Dogs and puppies were the main sufferers, involved in 152 reports, followed by cats and kittens, 31, and horses, 2.
