An affordable new ramen restaurant has just opened, bringing warmth and an abundance of flavour to winter in Box Hill.
And foodies are already diving into the large range of ramen and Japanese dishes on offer at Fukutontei Ramen.
Owner and head chef Jeff Tan said his restaurant had been incredibly busy in the month since it opened, with customers of all backgrounds loving the Japanese cuisine.
It’s the fourth Fukutontei Ramen venue to open in Melbourne, but Mr Tan said the Box Hill franchise brought with it its own special flavour.
The chef said he had used his 18 years’ experience specialising in cooking Japanese and Malaysian food to uniquely tailor the menu for his restaurant.
Pork is the hero of the menu, with the name Fukutontei Ramen coming from the Japanese word ton, meaning pork, fuku, meaning happiness and tei, meaning shop.
The restaurant offers 12 types of ramen to cater for all tastes and chilli tolerances.
Diners can also enjoy vegetarian, chicken, seafood as well as pork, and there’s an entire gluten-free menu.
Mr Tan said a popular and special dish on his menu was the Gyutan Don — grilled, spicy ox tongue served on rice.
“It’s a really famous dish,” he said.
The restaurant also offers a range of hot pots, bento boxes and soba, teppan, sukiyaki, rice and yaki meshi menus.
Mr Tan is still waiting on his liquor licence, but when it comes through he’s set to serve Japanese sake, liqueur and beer.
