A Nunawading cafe is the place to try Sri Lankan-style breakfast and lunch as well as the unusual trend of avocado coffee.
Customers have been flocking to Mr. President Cafe and Eatery in the first month it’s been open to try the unique items on its menu.
Run by Sri Lankan migrant Sam Kahandawala, the cafe offers a mix of Sri Lankan and modern Australian dishes for breakfast and lunch, as well as coffee and baked treats.
The Sri Lankan-style brekkie features poached egg, roti, mushrooms, feta, spinach, and stir-fried chickpeas.
For a Sri Lankan lunch diners can choose from a special fried rice dish, traditional curries, roti dishes and a Sri Lankan- style veggie bowl.
Mr Kahandawala said customers had been loving trying the Sri Lankan dishes, with many saying they hadn’t tasted the cuisine in the area before.
Coffee drinkers dining in at the cafe can also experience its Southern Asian twist.
Customers are given the option of having their beverages served in Sri Lankan mugs handcrafted from coconut shells.
And at Mr. President Cafe and Eatery, coffee-fans feeling a little more adventurous can take their drink to the next level and have it served in an avocado shell.
The hot beverage is poured into a mostly-hollowed out avocado shell, and the remaining avo is provided on the side as a snack.
Mr Kahandawala said it was a “beautiful” combination.
The concept has no connection to Sri Lanka, but comes from the cafe’s health focus.
Mr Kahandawala said he wanted to “provide the healthiest food possible”, and offers a range of salad bowls on the menu.

But the eatery’s collection of modern Australian dishes also includes treats, with the selection of burgers already proving to be a big hit.
Mr Kahandawala said the kitchen catered to food intolerances, and used a separate oven to ensure its gluten-free food was safe.
The eatery is at 2 Wood St, Nunawading and is open until 3pm every day.
