Fish and chip gurus have brought their award-winning recipes to Nunawading.
Peter and Heather Zontanos have just opened Hooked and Cooked on Rooks — offering fish and chips, souvlakis, burgers, HSPs and salads for lunch and dinner from Tuesdays to Saturdays.
It’s the eighth store the Glen Waverley couple have run in Melbourne’s outer east in the past 20 years, and Mr Zontanos said the were glad to be settling down closer to home.
Making fish and chips is their speciality and it’s a family tradition for the Zontanos family.
Mr Zontanos’ parents also ran fish and chip shops, and he worked in them as a child.
“I pretty much grew up in the industry,” he said.
And both his teenage children now work in the Nunawading store after school.
He’s a veteran fish and chip restaurateur and Mr Zontanos certainly knows what he’s doing.
Hooked and Cooked on Rooks has already been nominated for the 2019 Australian Fish and Chips Awards.
The couple’s other stores have claimed a Maroondah Leader Business Award and have been voted in the top five Victorian fish and chip shops in competition run by Nova FM.
Mr Zontanos said the same great recipes were being used in the Nunawading shop.
He said the business had been received really well since it opened on March 12.
“It’s been excellent,” he said. “Better than expected.”

It’s proven to be a lunchtime hit with the workers at the nearby factories and offices.
He said the store’s souvlakis and HSPs were particularly popular.
Mr Zontanos said he and Heather were keen to help out sporting clubs and community groups wherever they could.
“We’re always happy to help out within the community.”
The store already sponsors Mitcham Football Club.
It can be found at 148 Rooks Rd, Nunawading.
