A Mont Albert bakery is taking hot cross buns to the next level with its ever-growing list of flavours.
Forget the traditional chocolate and fruit-free types of hot cross buns, the bakers at Bread Street are making cherry ripe hot cross buns, jam doughnut hot cross buns and even lemon curd hot cross buns.
NEW CAFE THE TOAST OF THE TOWN
VETERAN FOODSTORE OWNERS’ NEW MONT ALBERT VENTURE
Owner David Winter has been coming up with new hot cross recipes since he got the idea from chatting to an adventurous baker in Gippsland.
And the ideas just keep coming.
He’s been experimenting with combining classic sweet flavours with the typical hot cross bun tastes.
The jam doughnut hot cross bun is a twist on the traditional type, featuring the usual spices and flavours with the addition of jam in the centre.
The cherry ripe hot cross bun is a play on the usual chocolate hot cross buns, with the bonus of cherry sauce.
The bakery has also been churning out custard hot cross buns, cranberry and white chocolate hot cross buns, an apple and cinnamon kind, salted caramel and even a jaffa flavour, featuring orange puree from real oranges inside a chocolate hot cross bun.
And for those wanting to err on the healthy side, Mr Winter has been making wholemeal hot cross buns, which are free of oils and sugars.
Next on the drawing board is a peppermint and chocolate hot cross bun.
Bread Street sells different flavours everyday.
