A 1000-space multistorey carpark near Glen Waverley station is the centrepiece of a bold council vision for the booming area.

But traders think Monash Council’s plans are too ambitious, and need to be scaled back.

The council is planning a new multi-deck carpark in Montclair Ave as part of a planned facelift of the area as a dining, retail and entertainment destination.

The carpark would provide a minimum of 1044 spaces — more than double the current amount.

The council is also investigating affordable apartment housing targeting renters, and an area of public open space.

“We are extremely excited about the prospect of it,” Glen Waverley Traders Association president Christo Christophidis said. “But council is trying to do way too much.”

Mr Christophidis said a focus on affordable living should be left to the developers and the plan should instead concentrate on growing and improving commercial, retail and entertainment offerings.

“We definitely need more commercial enterprises to enter that area,” he said.

“It should be office space … it’s got to be something the community needs.

“I don’t think the community needs living opportunities … otherwise we become oversaturated with apartments.”

The council also hopes to make improvements to the Kingsway strip.

Former mayor Paul Klisaris said Kingsway had “fantastic potential to be a dining and entertainment precinct to rival the best”.

“However, the potential is being lost because of the volume of traffic passing up and down the street, the people hovering to get a car park and the congestion that occurs,” he said.

“What is being proposed is more than just a carpark. It is something entirely different from what we have constructed before.”

Mr Christophidis said the association was “really excited about any type of development — we just want to see a bit of action now”.

The proposal can be seen online and a community information session will be held on November 28, at the Glen Waverley Civic Centre from 5.30-7.30pm.
