A MONASH University student who was prominent in its snowsports club will spend at least two years behind bars after being convicted of rape.
The Victorian County Court heard that Pierce Rozman performed oral sex on a drunk man while at holiday house in February 2016.
Judge Christopher Ryan said that rape was a serious offence and punishable by 25 years’ imprisonment.

Judge Ryan said the act was that of a young person and was opportunistic in nature, but its effect on the victim had been substantial — with an impact statement focusing on stress caused in nightmares, paranoia and fear as a result of the trial process.
“Your conduct represents a gross breach of trust,” Judge Ryan said.
“While the victim … was adversely affected by alcohol, you took the opportunity to rape him … as an act of sexual gratification.”
While Rozman alleged the victim had consented, Judge Ryan said it was plain from the jury’s verdict “that they accepted the victim’s version of events beyond reasonable doubt” and therefore must be sentenced on the basis “that the victim did not consent to the act that you performed on him”.

The 22-year-old, who attended Scotch College and was a peer ambassador leader and active member of Monash University Snowsports Club, had more than a dozen character references submitted to the court. He was described as “highly resilient, determined and highly motivated”, caring and has helped multiple friends experiencing mental health illnesses.
“You are plainly a highly intelligent and motivated young man.
You have the support of your family, friends, and your girlfriend and her family,” Judge Ryan said.
The judge said it meant Rozman’s prospect for rehabilitation was “promising”, but while there was an absence of aggravating factors, they were not mitigating ones.
Rozman was sentenced to four years in jail and will be eligible for parole in less than 22 months.
