The clean-up has barely stopped since Sunday’s storms. Manningham’s dedicated SES volunteers responded to more than 400 calls for help, carrying out temporary home repairs and clearing trees.

The big storm that smashed parts of Manningham on Sunday is still causing work for Manningham dedicated SES volunteers.

More than 400 families required help from the Manningham SES unit after large hail stones damaged roof tiles, smashed windows and destroyed skylights.

The hailstones also blocked gutters, leading to flooding in roof cavities causing some ceilings to collapse.

A number of families had to evacuate their homes. Most were able to stay with friends or relatives, with three requiring help from Manningham Council’s displaced persons program.

Temporary building repairs have been carried out until permanent work can be done.

The Manningham SES unit was helped by units from other areas and firefighters, with council officers also on hand for the clean-up.

SES officers also had to clear a number of fallen trees.

Warrandyte, Doncaster East, Templestowe, Doncaster and Bulleen were the most affected suburbs in the municipality, according to Manningham SES unit controller Will Leggat.

Mr Leggat said some homes had become uninhabitable following the storm.

“Most people were able to go to friends and families homes, however, three families in the area were displaced and lodged through Manningham Council’s displaced persons program,” he said.

“Wind in some areas was so extreme that one call was received from a homeowner who found his neighbour’s garage roof in his back yard.”

Mr Leggat said homeowners needed to prepare for such storms when they’re forecast.

“Keep your gutters cleaned, secure outside furniture and trampolines, and keep cars under cover,” he said.
