A professional motocross rider was stabbed in front of his wife and young son following a terrifying road-rage incident but that didn’t stop him copping a triple — conviction, fine and suspended licence.
Ryan Brown, 28, of Berwick, a member of the Freestyle Kings motocross team, was today convicted, banned from driving for six months and ordered to pay a $4000 fine in the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court after he pleaded guilty last week to recklessly causing injury and dangerous driving.
Leading Senior Constable Les Hare told the court Brown was driving on the Tullamarine Freeway with his wife and two-year-old son about 8.20pm on May 7 when a driver in front of him slammed on their brakes.
Brown was forced to swerve to avoid a collision, and Leading Sen-Constable Hare told the court when Brown drove up beside the driver, a 53-year-old man, the man shone a torch into Brown’s eyes.
Leading Sen-Constable Hare said Brown then pulled in front of the driver and slammed on the brakes, almost causing a crash, and the two men continued to veer in and out of each other’s lanes until they crashed near the freeway’s Bell St exit.
Brown followed the man to the Glen Waverley police station and Leading Sen-Constable Hare told the court both men got out of their cars and a verbal argument ensued.
Brown then attacked the other man, who pulled out a flick knife and stabbed Brown in the arm and leg, Leading Sen-Constable Hare said.
Brown’s lawyer Ramon Fowler last week told the court Brown’s injuries required surgery and he was unable to work for three months and now had limited movement in his left hand.
Brown also lost a sponsor as a result of negative media coverage of the incident and had received abuse from fans on social media, he said.
In sentencing Brown today, Ms MacCallum noted Brown had only one prior driving offence.
She said he’d lost $22,000 in income and noted the other driver, who was charged with careless driving and use of a controlled weapon, was dealt with by way of a court diversion.

But she said the seriousness of Brown’s attack on the other man and the risk to the public and his own family could not be overlooked.
“It is plain that not only were members of the public endangered by the behaviour you were engaged in, but (also) your wife and young child,” Ms MacCallum said.
“It is of concern you were unable to manage your anger and disengage from your pursuit of the victim.”
