A youth academy for girls is part of a $2.9 million upgrade to an elite football hub in Kilsyth.

The Kilsyth Centre for Excellence at Kilsyth Recreation Reserve is home to the Eastern Ranges Football Club and the AFL Yarra Ranges Commission.

The upgrade, officially unveiled last week, delivers elite training and competition facilities specialising in coaching and player development, and further opportunities for young players of all skill levels.

The upgrade included a multipurpose space, change rooms, umpire spaces, a kitchen, administration hub, gymnasium, storage and associated amenities.

More than 3500 people use the centre, including more than 300 junior inter-league athletes, with a further 500 participants involved in coaching education and development programs.

The hub will also be home to the AFL Youth Girls Academy, allowing more than 120 female participants to train at the state-of-the-art site, with future games also an option.

The $2.9 million project included $900,000 from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

The project was delivered by the Yarra Ranges Council, which contributed $1 million.

The Federal Government, through the Community Development Grants Program and the AFL, provided $500,000 and $550,000 respectively.
