Huge delay for $120m Ringwood RSL redevelopment after developer backs out of project

Big plans for a $120m redevelopment of the Ringwood RSL — including 230 apartments, ditching the pokies and new sports facilities — have been quashed, delaying the project by years.

The $120m transformation of a major RSL sub-branch in Melbourne’s east is set to be delayed for years after the developer pulled out of the contract because neither party could agree on a time frame.

The Ringwood RSL sub-branch announced the plan to upgrade its Station St venue in 2019, with the project to include 230 apartments, offices and commercial space, a function and events centre and a gym and pool, along with revamped club facilities.

The sub-branch planned the redevelopment to diversify its revenue streams with measures including ditching the pokies for eSports, and income generated by the sports facilities and leisure centre.

In 2021, the project was forecast to be completed in 2025, but the development was yet to get off the ground.

Ringwood RSL sub-branch president David Jamison was disappointed that retirement living operator Levande withdrew from the development.

“We are now back to square one,” he said.

“All the years of work into this project has now come to naught.”

Mr Jamison said the setback would delay the redevelopment for up to five years but the sub-branch would continue to support the project.

“The sub-branch still is committed to the redevelopment of the premises to ensure its future viability,” he said.

“The provision of these facilities to both generate income and provide support to veterans and their families in the outer eastern area was crucial if the work of the RSL is to continue.

“We will continue pushing for this project.”

Mr Jamison also said it was “ironic” that the project had already suffered through convoluted planning and approval processes during a housing shortage.

A Levande spokesman said the retirement living operator was disappointed they could not move ahead with the project.

“We share the Ringwood RSL’s disappointment that it wasn’t possible for both parties to find a way forward in a suitable time frame,” the spokesman said.

“We wish the RSL well with the future redevelopment of the site.”
