A cafe with a difference has opened in Eastland and it’s aiming to provide more than just coffees for eastern suburbs residents.

The Hungry 4 Success Cafe and Catering opened on Wednesday morning in the Eastland Shopping Centre on level one near Harris Scarfe.

The cafe, operated by the Glen Park Community Centre, is a social enterprise cafe that provides jobs to vulnerable groups including people with disabilities, mental health issues and those who have faced long-term unemployment.

All revenue from the cafe will go into Glen Park Community Centre’s employment, education, community and emergency relief programs.

Glen Park Community Centre executive Heidi Butler-Moore said the new social enterprise cafe was helping people get their lives back on track.

“Employment saves lives, and without it people can get lost and find themselves socially isolated,” Ms Butler-Moore said.

“The cafe is about ensuring people get the skills, experience and support they need to be productive, engaged members of our community and enter the workforce, particularly in

hospitality.”

The original Hungry 4 Success program began at Eastland in 2018 and saw 156 people complete the program.

Eastland’s general manager Greg Balmforth said the cafe was the natural next step following the success of the training program.

“Hungry 4 Success changes people’s lives so it made perfect sense to expand the program into its own cafe and catering space when a tenancy became available at Eastland,” Mr Balmforth said.

“Eastland is extremely proud of our partnership with Glen Park Community Centre and the benefit we are able to deliver together to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”

The cafe will be open from 8am to 3pm every Wednesday to Sunday.
