The former long-term home of Vermont Medical Clinic looks set to be revived as a healthcare centre after a push to build a childcare centre in its place was rejected by Whitehorse Council and VCAT.

The single-storey centre at 529 Mitcham Rd, Vermont, is scheduled to be auctioned off this month, with agent CBRE advertising the “medical professional’s dream” as ready for immediate occupation.

Agent Josh Twelftree said the 280sq m centre, which housed Vermont Medical Clinic for more than 40 years, had just undergone a refurbishment.

He said CBRE was expecting a high level of interest in the property, particularly because it had 22 on-site car spaces and scope to be home to seven practitioners, pending council approval.

“We have started experiencing significant demand from medical professionals over

the past 18 months for vacant medical centres, which they can occupy and run their

own clinics out of,” Mr Twelftree said.

“Quality options with scope to achieve medical permits are increasingly rare, particularly within the eastern suburbs.”

Agent Sandro Peluso described the listing as an unmissable opportunity for owner occupiers.

The site was listed for sale on CBRE’s website just weeks after VCAT shutdown the possibility of Folkestone Investment Management Limited transforming the centre into a double-storey daycare centre.

The developer was seeking to remove 33 trees on the 1416sq m site to make way for a 96-place centre with a basement carpark, after purchasing the property in May 2017.

But on January 31, 2019, the tribunal ruled it was upholding the council’s decision to refuse to grant a permit.

Agreeing with the council and the people who objected to the proposal, the tribunal decided the plans were too great for a site “in a location where the planning context seeks to limit development and achieve a character dominated by vegetation rather than buildings”.

The centre is set to be auctioned on-site on Thursday, March 21.
