A woman says her family must have been “saved by the grace of god” when an out-of control car flew into her Burwood home last night.

Leticia and Vincent Ansell were watching TV in bed about 10.25pm when a car soared through their front fence, knocked over their van parked in the driveway, drove over it and hit the house.

The car came to a stop on top of the overturned van.

“We just heard this big bang,” Ms Ansell said.

“And my dog jumped out of the room really fast — he was terrified.”

“Then my son went out and saw a green car on top of our van.”

No one was injured.

Ms Ansell said the bed where she and her husband were at the time was right against the front wall of the brick house, which had been protected from the force of the crash by the van.

The car ended up on top of the van it knocked over.

She said it was only yesterday they had decided to start parking the van in a different spot, but hadn’t actually done it yet.

“Maybe we were saved by the grace of god.”

She said her son was safely in another part of the house.

The driver of the green Honda hatch, a 26-year-old Blackburn South woman, was freed from the car by MFB firefighters, before she was taken to Box Hill Hospital as a precaution.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said she had been driving down Renown St when her car’s brakes had failed at the street’s intersection with Leonard St, sending the car straight into the Ansells’ property.

About 15 firefighters worked to clear the scene.

Ms Ansell said there was “a lot of debris”, with the van looking to be a write-off.

She said the front brick fence and the driveway were badly damaged, while only a few bricks on the house were chipped.
