Committal proceedings into the case of a Western Region police officer accused of sexual assault will begin in August.

Strathfieldsaye man Andrew Lawrence Cussen, 30, faced the Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with three counts of sexually touching a woman without her consent.

The Bendigo sexual offences and child-abuse investigation police unit allege Cussen sexually assaulted a woman in Bendigo in April 2023 while the constable was off duty.

Defence lawyer Geoffrey Steward told the court Mr Cussen would plead not guilty.

A committal mention was scheduled for August 23 at Bendigo, with a hand-up brief due on July 3.

A Victoria Police spokesman earlier confirmed that Mr Cussen was suspended from the police force.
